The cigarette is not the problem
This is the first thing worth understanding, and it is the reason most methods to quit smoking eventually fail. The cigarette is a symptom. It is the visible surface of something the person has not yet been able to address underneath. Something they are carrying emotionally, something that produces a tension or discomfort that the cigarette, for a few minutes, takes away.
When someone reaches for a cigarette, they are rarely thinking about cigarettes. They are responding to something they feel. Stress that has nowhere to go. Anxiety that the conscious mind has not been able to quiet. A moment of emotional overwhelm that needs to be managed. The cigarette does not cause those feelings. It covers them.
This is why quitting is so hard. You are not just trying to break a physical habit. You are trying to remove the thing that has been managing something painful without ever having found another way to manage it. Take away the cigarette without addressing what it has been covering, and the unaddressed feeling does not go away. It finds another outlet, or it drives the person back to smoking.
“Every time we work with someone who smokes, the cigarette is never the real subject of the session. What we are actually working with is what the person has been using the cigarette to survive.”
— Jose Montanez, C.IHt · Soul HypnotherapyWhy everything else has not worked
Patches replace the nicotine. Gum replaces the oral habit. Willpower tries to override the craving through sheer force of conscious intent. Medications dull the neurological reward cycle. All of these approaches address the cigarette itself. Not one of them addresses the emotional function the cigarette has been serving.
Even most hypnotherapy for smoking falls into this same category. The conventional approach uses suggestion — the therapist guides the person into a relaxed state and then plants ideas designed to make smoking feel unappealing or make not smoking feel more natural. This can work for some people, particularly those whose smoking is primarily habitual rather than emotionally driven. But for the person whose cigarette is covering real pain, suggestion alone does not reach deep enough.
Introspective Hypnosis goes deeper. Not because it is more forceful, but because it asks a different question entirely. Instead of asking how to stop the behavior, it asks what the behavior has been protecting the person from feeling.
What actually happens in a session
A session with Jose begins with a conversation. Not a form to fill out, not a checklist, but a real exchange about where you are, what you have tried, and what you sense might be underneath the habit. That conversation creates the foundation for what follows.
From there, you are guided into a deeply relaxed state. You remain fully aware throughout. You can speak, ask questions, and end the session whenever you choose. Nothing happens without your full awareness and participation.
In this state, the subconscious becomes accessible in a way it simply is not during ordinary waking life. And through that access, we are able to find what the smoking has been covering. Not to force it, not to shame it, but to understand it, to address it with compassion, and to release it at the level where it actually lives.
When that happens, the cigarette stops being necessary. Not because we told the person to stop wanting it. Because the thing that made them want it has been addressed.
Who this approach is for
This way of working is particularly meaningful for people who feel something deeper is happening with their smoking. People who sense, even if they cannot name it, that the habit is tied to something emotional they have not fully resolved.
This may resonate with you if...
- You have tried to quit before and succeeded for a while, but always returned to smoking when life got hard
- You notice you smoke more when you are stressed, anxious, lonely, or overwhelmed
- You have quit using willpower but felt restless, irritable, or empty without the cigarette
- You sense the smoking is connected to something you have been carrying for a long time
- Patches, gum, and other methods have worked temporarily but the habit returned
